Open Question: Two questions concerning the recall of Dexamethasone?1 April 2011, 6:33 am. Following is a brief excerpt from the FDA website concerning the Dexamethasone recall: This voluntary recall was initiated because some vials of these lots either contain particulates or have the potential to form particulates prior to their respective expiration dates. Potential adverse events after intravenous administration of solutions containing particulates, may include disruption of blood flow within small blood vessels in the lung, localized inflammation (swelling and redness due to accumulation of inflammatory cells), and granuloma formation. Intramuscular administration could result in foreign body inflammatory response, with local pain, swelling and possible long term granuloma formation. American Regent is undertaking this recall in consideration of the potential for safety issues, if these lots of product are administered to patients.
http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm247526.htm Considering the dates of the recalled lot numbers, it is entirely possible that I (or perhaps one of you) have received an injection of this product. My first question: Would Dexamethasone administered by iontophoresis be included in this recall? Iontophoresis is the injection of a steroid such as Dexamethasone through the skin. This is administered by a physical therapist who puts the drug on a pad, which is then applied to the skin.Electrodes are attached, and the drug is injected into the affected area through electrical impulse. My second question: Is Dexamethasone used in the traditional "steroid shot" one receives in a joint to relieve pain and swelling? I ask because I have had both iontophoresis and a "steroid shot" on my right ankle. The pain and swelling have never diminished, and seem to have increased over the past several months. After having received information about this recall from my pharmacy, I can't help but wonder if I have received an injection from the recalled lot, and have no idea how to confirm this as I do not have the vial(s) used in my possession. Any information you can provide will be most appreciated. Thank you.
