Open Question: Why do smart people believe in pseudoscience and superstition?
23 October 2011, 7:54 am

I sometimes have a hard time comprehending how people so much smarter than me can believe in things that I think are so stupid? I can't understand though how someone who appears to be a lot smarter than me and my other friends can believe in psuedoscience and superstition? He seems to be really dumb when it comes to reasoning and common sense. The guy swears by astrology and numerology. He regularly visits a tarot card reader and has his own deck. He also believes in taking all kinds of bottles of natural herb and remedies he takes instead of getting real FDA approved meds from a doctor. He gets ripped off from this odd lady in town who sells very over priced prune juice because she claims it cures everything; he swears he would be helpless without it. He also is a regular customer at a local mystic shop that sells magical charms. He swears by wearing magical charms on his body to protect himself from evil and has had the lady bless him with spells that will aid him. My friend didn't go to college and always makes fun of how stupid college grads like myself are and says they brainwashed me in college. He is a lot smarter than me in a lot of ways. He is a wiz at jeapordy and can recall a lot of history facts, a feat most people can't do. He also has excellent people skills. He knows how to be entertaining when he talks and has a knack for making everyone in the room laugh, a skill I have never had. He also is extremely gifted at solving crossword puzzles in the newspaper and can remember all kinds of facts most people can't. He seems to remember everything. He also makes really good money as a railroad engineer pulling in 80k a year in his 20's. He also is a deeply religous catholic and believes if your not catholic your an awful person and going to hell. He seems to not want to understand other religons. I have been sometimes an athiest in my life and sometimes a Gnostic and just don't understand his viewpoint.
